Our Weekly Morning Routine (How To Be Productive At Home!)

Raise your hand if you work with your husband!

Oh, just me? There’s only a few of us?

Working with your spouse brings its own set of hurdles, and even to add to that, both of us work from home too!

Between separate shoots (Berty is a PNW wedding photographer too), multiple projects at once, and an endless to-do list, a strict morning routine is necessary for survival.

In this post, we’re breaking down our morning routine for you. We’re sharing what works, what doesn’t and tip on how you can start your own routine to have the most productive week possible!

Note: Our weeks get thrown off all the time from traveling, but when we are home, we like to stick to this morning routine. It helps us balance work with physical activity, foster production, and creativity, and helps keep us on track with our blog, business, and life in general. This schedule may be different for everyone, but we’re here to share what works for us and how we stay inspired day after day.

Our Weekly Morning Routine

(How To Be Productive When You Work From Home)

Before we begin, here are some tips to set you up for success:

  • Set aside a space in your home that is for WORK ONLY. This helps your brain separate work from leisure. For us, it’s our own home office, with a door that shuts!
  • Keep a work calendar. It will help you plan out each week as they come.
  • If you want a little more guidance, we recommend the book The Miracle Morning for Entrepreneurs. It helped us create a holistic foundation for our morning routine – physically and intellectually!

Daily Schedule

6:00 am -7:00 am: Wake Up

Berty and I like to wake up early to make the most of our day. This is NOT “work time”, but a space set aside to slowly wake up, reflect on the day, and get ready. Occasionally – okay, frequently – Berty makes coffee with our Chemex (my favorite).

Quick Tip: If waking up early is difficult for you, try gradually training your body to do so. Set your alarm to go off 15 minutes earlier than your usual routine. After a week, set it 15 minutes earlier than that, and so on until you reach your desired wake up time! The goal is to create good habits, not to force your body into something right away.

8:00 am -9:00 am: Exercise

One of the easiest ways for us to exercise is to take a long walk around our local park.  Not only does it help get our blood flowing in the morning, but Berty and I also get an opportunity to catch up with each other, check-in, and talk about whatever is coming up next in our crazy schedule.

When we have poor weather, we like to choose from one of these virtual fitness programs to move our body right from the living room!

Quick Tip: Leave your exercise clothes and shoes by your bed so it’s easier for you to get outside in the mornings! If you’re feeling like you need some extra motivation, plan a new hike close by or choose a different walking route. You’ll be excited about getting up in the morning for a new adventure.

9:00-11:00am: Content Writing

Now that we’ve fueled our bodies and got our blood pumping, it’s time to put that brainpower to work. I like to make breakfast for both of us during this time. This is when we get our best ideas and have the motivation to sit down and write or work on a creative project.

Need some tips on how to stay focused? These productivity tips for bloggers are perfect for writers who want to make a big impact in a short amount of time!

While Berty is busy editing photos, I’m writing blog posts for the website. Posts are a LOT of work behind the scenes! During this time, I’m usually writing travel itineraries, researching useful links to add, creating content for Pinterest, and so much more!

Quick Tip: To stay on-task during long projects, try the Pomodoro Method (25-minute work sessions with a short break in between). This has helped me stay focused because it gives me a limited amount of time to work. It also forces me to take scheduled breaks, which lets my brain take a break too.

11:00am-12:00pm: Emails + Networking

After a good session of content writing and creative work, Berty and I talk together about upcoming projects. We also take this time to dream a bit about the places we want to go and reach out to brands we think would fit well with our adventures. This is an important part of our job. We love collaborating with brands that make a difference and share our values!

We also take the time to respond to any reader questions (seriously, send us an email!) because we love talking with fellow adventure lovers. Some of our most asked questions are around specific destinations and specific gear we use – and we love going into detail about it!

Quick Tip: When you are responding to your own emails, this is a good time to clean out that inbox too! This is time set aside to do just that, so tackle it little by little, even if it’s just 10 emails a day! Here’s a link to help you unsubscribe from email lists you no longer need so that your inbox stays clean.

Having a morning routine helps Berty and I stay productive and have some structure in our lives. While we may not achieve big things every morning, we’re big believers in showing up every day to make a difference, even if it’s small!

Thanks for taking the time to read our post. We hope it encourages you to create some structure in your day too, to help you achieve your goals – whatever they may be!
