6 Magical Prague Christmas Markets You Need To Experience

Post Summary: 6 Magical Prague Christmas Markets and Where To Find Them.

Have you ever spent a Christmas away from family and friends?

Berty and I are having our very first holiday just the two of us, so we were looking for a place that had plenty of Christmas cheer.

After deciding on the Czech Republic, we learned that Prague Christmas Markets were famous all over Europe, so naturally, we had to check it out!

Berty and I were new to this holiday market culture – we had never tried mulled wine (literally only knew the term because of Game of Thrones), hot mead (again, GoT), or tried sausages from a street vendor in the middle of the city.

Sooo, we started the hunt to try all the Prague christmas markets!

In this post, we’re sharing the big ones to the small ones, touristy to local.

Each one has its own unique feel, and we wanted to highlight the best of what they had to offer.

Thank you to Visit Czech Republic for hosting us here, and giving us the opportunity to experience a traditional Czech Christmas! We hope you enjoy it!

6 Magical Prague Christmas Markets

1. Tylovo Namesti Christmas Market

Tucked away in the neighborhood of Vinohrady, this mini Christmas market is where we bought most of our holiday spoils. It seemed to us like this was a market for locals, so prices were cheap and fair.

There were also more hand-made pieces like ornaments and nutshell candles which made it feel special and traditional.

We bought a garland here for our hotel room to make it feel a little more like Christmas since we’re away from our families during this season (see picture below!).

Best For: Low price holiday decorations (mistletoe, wreaths, trees), Handmade ornaments

2. Old Town Square Market

Because it’s the largest and most photographed place in Prague during Christmas, we have to include this one!

Old Town Square is located in the center of Prague, which is the main tourist area of town. During the month of December, vendors fill the square selling food, ornaments, gifts, dessert, and of course, mulled wine.

Definitely come here for the light displays. The Christmas vibe is super strong here!

It boasts the highest tree in Prague and the Square is always buzzing with people, music, and fun. Just a heads up – prices are higher here than the rest of the markets in Prague but it’s still worth a visit!

Best For: Christmas light displays, Huge Christmas Tree, Photography

3. Namesti Miru

We were stoked to stay at Miss Sophie’s Hotel which made this local market completely walkable!

Here, we enjoyed some of our favorite Christmas cookies, hot mead, and mulled wine. If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Prague’s Christmas goodies, this is the market for you!

Looking around, we also saw that this was the market to meet up with friends and family too. Children from local schools decorated darling little trees which are displayed at the front of the market – all decorated with recycled material!

Best For: Christmas cookies, Mulled wine, Hot mead, Gathering with friends

4. Prague Castle Markets

If you’re craving history, holiday cheer, and a little bit of a medieval feel, the Christmas markets here are worth checking out.

We encountered two separate ones when roaming around the Prague Castle. One was on the outside of the walls and the second one was within. Many vendors were selling traditional artifacts that fit with the castle’s vibe.  Items like iron flowers made from a live blacksmith forge, lace table runners, and gorgeous textiles filled the streets.

Best For: Medieval vibes, Great views of Prague, Christmas gifts with history

5. Wenceslas Square

We came to this Prague Christmas market and had the most perfect time. The snow and lights combined made for a magical scene as we walked down the street enjoying the Christmas cheer.

Buy a cup of mulled wine to sip on as you wander through the market – and if you aren’t near any market, here’s a recipe for it to give you a little taste of a Czech Christmas. We recommend coming anytime after 5 pm to see the lights lit up for the evening!

Best For: A stroll with mulled wine, Enjoying Christmas lights, Wood-carved toys + handmade goods

6. Pilsen Christmas Market *Bonus*

This Christmas Market is not in Prague, but rather just an hour’s drive outside of the city.

We spent the day with Czexperience, touring the Pilsner Urquell Factory and ending our day here at their Christmas Market. We loved this one for the sheer amount of variety that was available to see, buy, and do.

Locals were selling unique crafts like candles, painted mugs, and homemade cookies. We also enjoyed live music, a petting zoo, and tried a little rural sausage! If you’re looking for a very authentic market experience, this is definitely the market to check out.

Best For: Local crafts, Traditional food, Live music, Family gatherings

  1. We were in Prague last December 14-16… We visited 3 of the Christmas Markets on your list. It was so magical, most especially, Old Town! We chose Prague & Budapest, as well, to experience Christmas markets for the first time.
